Ceramic Whispers

Ceramic Whispers is a small, digital ceramic collection that I sculpted in Nomadsculpt.

Ceramic Whispers is inspired by the work of one of my favourite artists, Francesca Woodman’s collection: House. These pictures give me the perfect eerie feeling and depiction of depression, where one just sits inside and wastes away, morphing into the furniture, or in this case, the ceramics. Francesca was often described to be the complete opposite of her self-portraits and in het diary they often found her writing down about happy things such as “chocolate truffles, peach candy & polka dotted cookies”. To visualise this juxtaposition I have created a seemingly ‘normal’ ceramic photoshoot with the pain being shown in the silent tears cried.

Majestic Muse

Majestic Muse is a marble sculpture that I sculpted in Nomadsculpt, inspired by the movie The Woman King and the majestic but resilient women, their hair and body decoration.

My 3D sculpting workflow

Sculpting

  • I like to use Nomadsculpt as a 3D sketchbook. I always start of with a sphere and with every stroke the shape get defined on the screen and the idea gets further developed in my head. Sculpting in 3D is much like sculpting in real life but it’s erase button leaves more space for creativity, in my opinion.

In this programme I like to apply textures, shapes and colours in the earlier stages of a project. In the later stages I start blurring out the working lines and refining the shapes.

Applying materials

  • After perfecting the sculpting phase I lik to export my projects to Blender where I can play around with colour, materials and (procedural) textures.

Rendering

  • The final step of the process is the photostudio set up. It’s a tedious job that I like to mix up with the choosing of the colours and textures, as both influence eachother.

As a photostudio I mostly use my photo-dome. Within the dome I play around with different light and render settings to come to the final product.

from sphere to statue

The way the digital photostudio has been set up together with the lighting creates a juxtaposition with the traditional looking marble buste.

TOBACCO THEATER

The sculpting I did for the Tobacco Theater is a conceptual extension of their new branding. I work as a freelancer at the theater in service and know their atmosphere and style by heart.

Tobacco Theater oozes extravagance, from the performances to the stage settings and the beautiful, historical Amsterdam building itself. All throughout the building you will find beautiful artworks, massive greenery and over the top (golden) decoration edging on the right side of being tacky.

Tobacco Theater has recently undergone a re-branding and has received a new logo, which is where I got inspired to design a 3D extension for their branding package.

As usual I started with the sculpting phase in Nomadsculpt. I decided to sculpt a marble buste to keep the extravagance of the theater’s overall style. Adding in the over the top proportions and an iconic look of the facial hair was important to me to keep the cartoon-isch feel of the original drawing.
